FORMAT
Instruction Manual
Please start your study of instructions by learning to create a template for an instruction manual booklet. The reason I assign an instruction manual in booklet form is to provide students with a substantial project worthy of a usability test so as to experience the full writing process cycle. Instructions are, in my opinion, the technical writing genre that most represents the field of technical communication and that requires the fullest set of technical writing skills.
The slide show, below, includes pictures of the eight pages (half-sheets) of the instruction manual I require in my technical writing classes.
Not all instructions, of course, are complex enough to require a manual to present them. However the study of an instruction manual should help students create all kinds of instructions from telling a new employee how to reach the parking garage to providing clients with professionally developed product instructions.
Slide Show: Wave your cursor over the object, click on the Play button that appears (top left corner) or one of the thumbnails. These pages fit onto two sheets of paper that are printed double sided, stacked, and folded to produce the booklet.
